North Liberty Community Library
Board of Trustees
August 20, 2007

The meeting was called to order by President Matt Irving at 7:00 p.m. at the North Liberty City Council Chambers, 25 W. Cherry St.

Board members present were, Matt Irving, Peggy Waters, Carol Thompson, Andrew Freeman, Shawn Selch, Anne Daniels and Library Director Dee Crowner.

Approval of Agenda:

The category “Adult Services Librarian” was added under reports. A motion to approve the agenda as amended was made by Selch, seconded by Thompson and approved unanimously.

Guests:

Mike Stoffregen from the Community Foundation of Johnson County and Tracey Mulcahey gave a presentation and answered questions of the North Liberty Community Fund. The possibility of  using a charitable giving fund for donations to build the new library and an endowment to fund operations of the new building. Gifts to either fund would be tax deductible donations but only gifts to the endowment would be eligible for a 20% state tax credit.

Public Comment: None

Approval of Minutes:
A motion to approve the January minutes was made by Selch, seconded by Freeman and approved unanimously.

Reports:

Budget - Jenny Garner:
The cost of electricity and physicals for new staff are now line items in our budget. Fees for janitors and maintenance is billed at the end of the year.

Youth and Teen Services - Elaine Reitz:
Andrew Frisbie began as Youth and Teen Services Librarian on July 1. TAG will participate in the chili-dog fair at the Johnson County Fairgrounds on September 23.

Assistant Director - Jennie Garner:
There was no Assistant Director report this month.

Director - Dee Crowner:
Vania Minor resigned the first part of July and Jessica Bielicke will resign effective August 24. Both expressed disappointment with the Compensation Study and salary increases as a reason for leaving. Emily O-Sheridan has been hired as assistant librarian to fill Vania’s position.
We are over budget on databases because we added a homework help database.
Dee would like to create a Community Center Discipline Board. She feels the board would assist in handling chronic discipline problems in a consistent manner. The expansion committee will interview fundraisers on August 27 and architects on August 29.
The last Live at the Library concert will be September 9 at 1 p.m.
Patrons can put their own holds on books and check what they have out and when it is due.

Friends of the Library - Carol Thompson:
Friends met August 8. Birdies for Charity is over and raised $600-800 for the library. There will be a waffle breakfast on September 20. Younkers coupon books will also be on sale for $5.

Adult Services Librarian – Elaine Reitz:
Elaine applied for and received a $2000 grant from Target for next year’s summer reading program.

Policy Review:
Interlibrary Loan: A motion to approve the interlibrary loan policy as it is was made by Thompson, seconded by Waters and approved unanimously.

Old Business:
Steering Committee: The committee met on the 15th. They received three RFPs from fundraisers and two from architects. Dee will look into a Kresge grant.

 

New Business:
Board Self Evaluation: The board reviewed the Self Evaluation. Irving will finalize our self evaluation and the board will vote on it at the next meeting.

Assistant Director’s Report: The board would like a report from the assistant director, even if it says there is nothing to report for this month.

Adjournment:
The motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Thompson, seconded by Waters and unanimously approved at 8:32 p.m.
